Ready to see Daryl Dixon of The Walking Dead in Death Stranding? Not so soon- at least until Hideo Kojima rounds up ex-Konami developers to start work on the game.
Kojima Snags Ex-Konami Developers
Hideo Kojima made headlines when he hired ex-Konami president Shinji Harana to Kojima Productions. The director is currently rolling up his sleeves to work on Death Stranding, the first game he started for his new studio following his departure from Konami in 2015. It seems Kojima is picking up other executives at his former company.
Aside from Harana, more developers followed suit. GamingBolt checked LinkedIn profiles of executives newly hired from Kojima Productions. They found out that they hired ex-Konami game developers Masaki Saito, and Jackie Tan. Furthermore, senior character designer Chihoko Uchiyama, and cinematic artist Yasuhiro Kawakami were also included in the roster.
The list goes on and on. In addition, Akio Sakamoto was another developer in the roster. Sakamoto was the brains behind FOX game engine, which could help Kojima make the most out of the Decima game engine. The game engine powers Death Stranding, including another game titled Horizon: Zero Dawn. As of today, there are a total of ten former Konami developers now working for Kojima Productions.
Konami Working Environment
There had been rumors circulating that the working conditions in Konami were not very conducive to developers. Furthermore, the studio demotes employees aggressively, moving them to other departments while closely monitoring their movements. These speculations might be the reason why the first ten ex-Konami employees decided to look somewhere else. The switch is definitely beneficial to the development of Death Stranding. As the studio starts full-length development for the title, the Konami diaspora will be evident as work on the game progresses.
Kojima’s new project is an open world action adventure game. The trailer released at the GAME Awards last December 2016 features a character played by Mads Mikkelsen, which will be one of the game’s antagonists. Meanwhile, Norman Reedus, known for his work in The Walking Dead, is the protagonist. It will be a PlayStation Exclusive, however, the game is slated to come in PC as well.
