It is about time to see Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and the rest of the gang in a Guardians of the Galaxy game. However, this may delay another title. Recent developments in the gaming community indicate that this new game may very well halt the progress for a growing franchise.
The announcement of a Guardians of the Galaxy game and The Avengers Project has intrigued fans. This also reinvigorated interest in the Marvel side of superhero gaming. After all, DC Entertainment has fans occupied with Injustice 2 and a slate of Batman Arkham games. However, it seems a Marvel game in the works may very well delay the next Deus Ex game.
This sparks an intriguing connection between the Guardians of the Galaxy game and the slate of Square Enix’s franchises. Curious fans can look at a more detailed report below. However, gamers ought to take this with a grain of salt as these are just rumors so far.
Guardians of the Galaxy Game
The Guardians game will be the second entry in the new partnership between Square Enix and Marvel. The first one was of course the recently-announced The Avengers Project. No one knows what the story will be about so far. However, they are said to be standalone and original stories.
Crystal Dynamics will be helming the development of The Avengers game. However, Square-owned Canadian studio Eidos Montreal will also be helping out. It can be remembered that Eidos Montreal is best known for developing the recent Deus Ex games. Eurogamer said the Guardians title is also in its early production stages.
However, the development of these titles may very well compromise the development of the sequel of the recent Deus Ex game. According to Kotaku, a Square Enix statement said that the developers are “still working on expanding the Deus Ex universe.” They are both creating new content for Deus Ex and working on the new Marvel projects.
Delayed Deus Ex game?
The Deus Ex games, as in Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, grew in popularity because of their intriguing storylines. However, the ending of the latter sparked a need for a third entry for the franchise. Unfortunately, gamers may not see this game in a few years.
According to Eurogamer, the game “grew too large in scope” that it had to cancelled. Of course, there is still a possibility that it can be finished in a few years’ time. This is because Mankind Divided did take five years to complete. There is also the possibility of finishing the story using a graphic novel.
The upcoming downloadable content (DLC) pack, A Criminal Past, will have a February 23 arrival. This will serve as a prequel to the main game. However, these all seem to be a lackluster amount of content. After all, Eidos did tease a “commitment … to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis.”
Meanwhile, Eidos is also hard at work with the next Tomb Raider project. It can be remembered that this was leaked last November when someone left a Shadows of the Tomb Raider presentation open on a subway. This means the focus of the studios may very well be directed to the Marvel titles, and the Tomb Raider series, but no Deus Ex for now.
