Here’s Why Mass Effect Andromeda Isn’t Part Of The Original Trilogy

Bioware’s latest title, Mass Effect Andromeda, will be released next week. While the upcoming action RPG has been making headlines, the developer admits this sequel wasn’t in the original plans.

Mass Effect is a sci-fi, third-person shooter video game that follows Commander Shepard. The Mass Effect plot follows the solder’s mission to save the galaxy from Reapers, a race of mechanical beings. Since 2007, three interconnected titles have been released. First was Mass Effect released in 2007; Mass Effect 2 followed in 2010 and the third installment hit the shelves in 2012. Mass Effect Andromeda will be the fourth game in the franchise but according to BioWare, it isn’t part of the original trilogy.

Mass Effect Andromeda – A Stand Alone Game

According to Gaming Bolt,  Andromeda may be the fourth title but it won’t be Mass Effect 4. Rather, it’s a brand new story that follows a separate plot. Unlike the previous titles, gamers won’t see familiar characters and locations – the game will deliver an entirely new story.

According to Mass Effect: Andromeda creative director, Mac Walters, there is no Mass Effect 4 because the series is only a trilogy with a conclusion. Furthermore, another installment would have been difficult to deliver as Mass Effect 3 had three different endings. Thus, Bioware opted to develop a separate game.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Trilogy In The Works?

Following the success of the Mass Effect trilogy, will Andromeda have its own three-part video game? In a published interview with Game Informer, Walters clarified that the upcoming title is not the start of a new Bioware trilogy.

Andromeda has a new main character, Ryder, who starts off as an untested soldier. Andromeda won’t have a traditional hero’s plot which the earlier three games had.

Speaking about the Andromeda story, “At the end of this, we want it to feel like a story has completed.” He continued, “Yes, for the universe, there’s much more you could explore, and we want to tease that, but it feels like its own story. It’s like, ‘Great. I had my Ryder sibling becoming-a-hero story. What’s next? Is it going to be Ryder? Is it going to be something else? Who knows?'”

In addition, producer Michael Gamble described the gameplay as a “different type of story” and won’t be anything similar to the earlier three games. Lastly, it’s possible that BioWare will develop more Mass Effect games within the Andromeda galaxy.

Mass Effect: Andromeda will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows on March 21. What are your thoughts on the separation of Andromeda from the earlier Mass Effect titles?
