Now is a good time as any to catch up with Arrow, because actress Katie Cassidy is back for good! Cassidy, who previously portrayed Laurel Lance (also known as Black Canary) in The CW’s hit television series, has now returned as a series regular. But how does this work out, considering her character had been previously killed off in Season 4?
Katie Cassidy Back In Arrow
For her return to the DC universe in Arrow, Cassidy will be portraying Black Siren, who is Laurel Lance’s Earth-2 doppelganger. Black Siren had been previously introduced in this year’s midseason finale, and the show’s producers had been so impressed by Cassidy’s portrayal of the character that they just knew they had to have her back on the show.
“We were so taken by Katie’s fearless interpretation of this character that we knew her story was not yet finished,” commented executive producer Marc Guggenheim. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Katie back to Arrow as Black Siren, though as her appearances on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow this season show, she never really left the family.”
To recap, Cassidy’s character, Laurel Lance, had been killed by antagonist Damien Darhk (played by actor Neil McDonough). Following the character’s death, Oliver Queen (the show’s titular protagonist, who is portrayed by Stephen Amell) opted to reveal Laurel’s mantle as Black Canary to the public. He did this in an effort to preserve Laurel’s image as a hero to Star City.
According to reports, Cassidy will be making an appearance in the last two episodes of Arrow Season 5. Following such, she will be starting Arrow Season 6 as a series regular once more.
Who Is Black Siren?
A doppelganger to Laurel Lance aside, Black Siren boasts the ability to scream at high frequencies. She obtained this power after being exposed to the dark matter that had been released from the S.T.A.R. Labs (Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories) particle accelerator.
Cassidy first made her debut as Black Siren in The Flash where she went up against the aforementioned superhero, portrayed by actor Grant Gustin. She was consequently defeated and the story later found her in the custody of A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group United Support) after Oliver handed her over to them.
Seeing as Black Siren is merely a doppelganger, it’s worth noting that this does not necessarily make her a Laurel Lance replica. The character is a whole other entity, however her return in Oliver’s life adds another facet to the guilt Green Arrow feels over Laurel’s death.
