It is hard being in the shoes of a big game developer like Square Enix. With a ton of titles on its helm, is an early Kingdom Hearts 3 release still a possibility? This is especially since Final Fantasy 15 may have a PC port sometime in the future.
The recent decade has been quite the set of years for Square Enix. Aside from finally revealing Kingdom Hearts 3, they finally released the much-awaited Final Fantasy 15. However, work is not yet done. Partnerships pop up here and there, and now Square Enix is also working on other projects such as Marvel’s Avengers.
Interestingly, a recent interview with Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata led to some intriguing questions about the two games. On the off-chance of a PC port for the former, is Kingdom Hearts 3 going to be delayed? Here are some highlights from the interview with Tabata.
Final Fantasy 15 PC Port?
It can be remembered that Tetsuya Nomura, the head honcho for the Kingdom Hearts game, was supposed to direct Final Fantasy 15. However, developmental concerns made Square Enix transfer the helm to Tabata. An interview translated by Gematsu had Tabata emphasize some plans with the game.
Tabata eventually revealed that he also wanted a PC port for the Final Fantasy game. He also wants to follow examples of games such as Grand Theft Auto and Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls and have user-generated content available. This is good news for fans, and potential bad news for KH3.
According to Game Rant, Final Fantasy 15‘s director emphasized that a PC port can only even be greenlighted if the game had good sales. Most releases on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 eventually get PC ports. However, Japan’s market is primarily focused on console gaming.
Kingdom Hearts 3: Release Expectations
Another interview with Famitsu, as translated by Gematsu, had Nomura explain the current developments surrounding Kingdom Hearts. He said that while development is going on smoothly, there are unannounced worlds that are being fixed. They are also fixing worlds one by one, proceeding with the next world only with complete approval.
This proves to be a slow process, but an efficient one. Sadly, this means a release date is not yet available. Fans who cannot wait can play previous Kingdom Hearts games, or play the recent release Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
Given that both Tabata and Nomura are big Square Enix figures, their ongoing projects obviously need their full attention. However, their progress is also dependent on the resources Square Enix gives them. Given that Nomura is also the head of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, pushing through with Tabata’s PC port may allocate important resources over to Final Fantasy 15. This can delay not just Kingdom Hearts but also Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Of course, it is important to take note that Square Enix has not made any official announcement on whether or not these games will get ports or have delayed developments. However, it is safe to assume that Nomura’s games will not be released any time soon.
