Niantic Labs has finally teased its next plan for Pokemon Go. It seems the mobile game is looking to bolster performance to regain its plateaued fame. Everything, however, will depend on how fans take to the upcoming updates they have in mind.
Pokemon Go enjoyed the app store spotlight after its momentous release back in July 2016. Its number of active users at the time threatened even giant social media icons such as Twitter. Unfortunately, a lack of features and its steep learning curve may have led players to rest from playing the game.
However, Pokemon Go remains to be one of the top downloaded games in the app stores and it aims to reclaim the top honors. If Niantic Labs is able to execute its gameplan well, its next major updates could do wonders for the title. In fact, there are no less than three updates on their way to release.
Pokemon Go: Game Highlights, Achievements
The big news came courtesy of Niantic Labs head honcho John Hanke. In his keynote where he addressed attendees of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, he responded to some concerns people have with the game. According to Game Rant, the title will have three major updates for the year.
Unfortunately, Hanke was not able to specifically reveal the contents of these updates. This will leave fans wondering which among their highly-requested features will arrive in the game. Regardless, “major” can be good news for players, as this can fix some pressing issues with the game.
As per Fortune, the game has had quite a splendid resume of achievements. It seems players have already walked a total of 8. -million kilometers just playing the game. One player walking the entirety of this distance can go farther than the Solar System. Players have also caught a total of 88 billion Pokemon, at the cost of 44 petabytes of mobile data.
Legendaries, PvP, Trading
Since Hanke did not specify which features will be in the new updates, fans are facing a bit of an empty sheet. However, players of the hit augmented reality (AR) game can have a few guesses. On a more improbable note, another major update may appear in the form of more Pokemon – in this case, Legendary creatures.
It has been a known fact that data of Generation 1 Legendaries such as Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are already in the game. These are the very creatures that are the mascots of the three main factions in the title. However, players still have no idea where they are. Given that the Pokemon spinoff’s anniversary is coming soon, it may be about time to unveil them. After all, one of the main tenets in Pokemon is “to catch ’em all.”
Two other requested features are player-versus-player (PvP) battles and trading. The latter would hopefully revive the huge trading “industry” that was inside both the older and newer iterations of the series. Trading Pokemon will be a useful feature for fans, especially since there are region-exclusive Pokemon. PvP, in the meantime, may be able to invigorate the spirit of competitive Pokemon gaming.
Meanwhile, fans still looking for reasons to go back to the game can look at its latest update. The title has just received its next batch of Pokemon – 80 of them – all for trainers to catch. Fans of the franchise can also savor the last few days of Pokemon Day, which marks 2017 as the 21st year of the hit game series.
