Pokemon Go will receive a number of new features and upgrades which should include Pokemon trading. In addition to player-versus-player battles, one of the most highly-anticipated additions is trading, which people expected to go beyond their region.
Niantic Labs’ senior product manager Tatsuo Nomura has hinted about Trading during this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the news may disappoint a lot of fans as the feature may be limited. Nomura adds Pokemon Go trading will have a set proximity, allowing only local and personal deals.
Gamers were excited about Pokemon Go trading because it would extend their gameplay reach. Initially, players expected they could do overseas trading and access region-specific Pokemon, reports Game Rant. In the same manner, the update will now do little to help players based in small towns with a limited Pokedex, noted Polygon.
“[Trading] won’t be through the internet,” said Nomura of the mechanics which have not been detailed. Additionally, he stated, “You shouldn’t be able to exchange your Pokémon with someone who is 100 miles away from you. … The person needs to be in your proximity.”
Trainers interaction in real life is a priority for Niantic and apparently, more so than the needs of more isolated players. Furthermore, getting people to come together in person is more than a vision for Niantic. Nomura says it’s the developer’s overall purpose.
In summary, Niantic hopes Pokemon trading will lead to the increase of gatherings and pub crawl. “We don’t want to just have that be an online game that you can just exchange virtually,” he added.

Pokemon Go Trading Update Release Date
Per SlashGear, it’s likely Niantic will release the three major updates sometime this year. Moreover, Niantic guaranteed they are working on a trading feature that “makes sense” and won’t end the game.
Similarly, after the game’s release last year, its popularity has dipped significantly. This is partly because a number of users felt the game had limited dimension. Here are some of the upgrades and features players have been clamoring for:
- Player-versus-Player (PvP) Battle
- Team-versus-Team (TvT) Battle
- Expansion of Trainer Mentoring
- Gym and Pokestop Customization
- Official Game-Sponsored Events
- Additional Pokemon Centers
- Augmented Reality Compatibility
- Increase in the Pokemon Variety
