The latest Pokemon Go update has got fans scratching their heads in disbelief! One particular Pokemon card now holds the distinction of being the priciest in the world! The $54, 970 tag has many gamers and enthusiasts stunned to say the least.
IGN reports that this is a Pikachu Illustrator Trainer Promo Hologram card. This card is reportedly in perfect condition and was sold at Heritage Auctions on 18th November. The auction house is located at Beverley Hills, California.
Most Expensive Pokemon Card
The card is designed by Atsuko Nishida and it beautifully displays Pikachu holding drawing tools and other implements. This must have been a major reason behind the surprising value and appeal of the card. The card was expected to rake in at least $50, 000 and it ended up exceeding all expectations at the auction.
The Pikachu Illustrator Card was offered in January 1998 to all winners at the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest. This was confirmed by the Director of Operations at Heritage Auctions, Barry Sandoval. He also confirmed that only 10 of these cards which remain are actually in good condition. It is also not clear as to how many of these cards are still available and publicly owned.
The very first card in this particular set was sold in the early 2000s. The asking price back then was a whopping $23, 000 which is a very impressive figure indeed. Pokemon card collections have gone up hugely ever since Pokemon Go attained worldwide popularity. Fans and players have collectively taken at least 100 billion steps over 3 months for catching Pokemon.
A solid gold official Pikachu card was put on sale for a whopping $2, 000 earlier this month as well.
