PS4 Update 5.0: External Hard Drive Support, Boost Mode & More

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) is a home video game console by Sony Computer Entertainment. Since its launch in November 2013, there have been 53.4 million sold units as of January 1 this year. Sony has a new PS4 update called the System Software Update 4.50. The update became available in beta last February 3 for selected users. Sony will release the update for all PS4 owners later this year.

External Hard Drive Support

The PS4 update will enable users to make use of the external drive. The drive will make use of USB 3.0 ports. It can also house up to 8 TeraBytes of data and can hold media files, applications and of course, games. However, saved games will be automatically stored in the internal drive.

PS4 Pro Boost Mode

The PS4 update 4.50 also includes a PS4 Pro update. Thus, owners of the PS4 Pro will now experience improvements on the gameplay such as higher and improved frame rates for games released even before the PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 series) was sold in the market. Its benefits may even extend beyond the said improved frame rates. Thus, it can improve the performance of games that were not patched to support Pro. But, the Boost Mode may cause an “unexpected behavior” in the console.

“Boost Mode lets PS4 Pro run at a higher [Graphics Processing Unit] and [Central Processing Unit] clock speed for smoother gameplay on some PS4 games that were released before the launch of PS4 Pro (and has not been updated to support PS4 Pro),” reports GameSpot. They confirmed that the feature will be in the beta. However, the inclusion into the official 4.50 release is still being considered.

Other Features

The update also includes PlayStation Virtual Reality support for 3D videos. This allows players to watch 3D Blu-Rays even without a 3D TV. This is done by integrating a Stereoscopic 3D feature to create the 3D effect achieved without using 3D glasses.

Updates also include user interface and social updates. Players can customize their background wallpapers in their menu screens using screenshots and images. PlayStation Network users can post status updates directly via their Activity Feed. This appears on their friends What’s New tabs.

Notifications are also made more simple because they have been condensed into just a page as compared to plenty of lists. Players can also access Party options from the Quick Menu while in-game. The menu was also made smaller so as to limit the amount of screen it takes up.
