What Is QuakeCon?
QuakeCon is a yearly convention held by ZeniMax Media, which celebrates and promotes the major franchises of id Software and other studios owned by ZeniMax. Moreover, it includes a large BYOC computer gaming event with a competitive tournament held every year in Dallas, Texas. The event, which is named after id Software’s game Quake, is attended by thousands of players from all over the world to celebrate the company’s gaming dynasty. The event is dependent on volunteers to cover many aspects of the organization.
QuakeCon was organized by a group of members of the EFnet IRC network. Even more, they used to hangout on the channel called #quake. In addition, various regular visitors wanted to meet and game together in person. This pushed Jim Elson, a.k.a. “H2H”, a gamer from the Dallas, Texas area with connections to the local Dallas-area gaming community to organize a meet and greet. He planned the event together with Yossarian Holmberg, a.k.a. “yossman”, a computer consultant from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, who decided to setup the event in a hotel.
The event was named ‘#quakecon’, after the IRC channel. Later on, ‘QuakeCon’ stuck. Elson and his friends organized the event for the first two years until people clamored for a more organized approach. Dedicated players assembled to assist in the setup, troubleshooting, and tweaking of the event’s equipment and network.
