Resident Evil 7 is one of the biggest game launches in recent times. Despite its success, Capcom’s recent announcement is now confusing many. The company issued a statement on the 27th of January, 2017.
This talked of how Resident Evil 7 generated shipments of a whopping 2.5 million copies to retailers. The launch of the game took place with huge fanfare on the 24th of January, 2017. The publisher talked of how a “solid start” could be seen for the new version of the game.
Yet, it now seems that not all sections are too happy with the sales numbers of Resident Evil 7. GameSpot reports that Capcom’s shares suddenly fell after the game shipped lower copies than its previous versions. As of now, lower shipment figures are being seen as the major reason behind this drop in share values.
Why Are The Shares Falling?
The share value had already fallen ever since the announcement made by Capcom. The 2.5 million figure is evidently not enough to impress everyone. The shares of the company ended on the 30th of January 2017 at a low of more than 3%.
This is quite shocking to say the least. The fall is being estimated as per the Tokyo Stock Exchange where Capcom shares are traded. Investors are reportedly nervous due to the 2.5 million figure shared by the company.
This compares unfavorably to earlier games in the popular series. Resident Evil 5 notched up shipments of 4 million copies in the first week alone. Resident Evil 6 also racked up 4.5 million copies in shipments in the very first week.
The first week is seen as vital for any game to really blaze a trail. The 2.5 million unit shipments seem to have fallen short of the sky high expectations surrounding Resident Evil 7. The downward trend is quite clear and may continue for some time.
Resident Evil 6 has already sold 6.6 million units while Resident Evil 5 has notched up 7.1 million units in overall sales. These are the best selling games for Capcom. It’s worth noting, however, that the games have been available in the market for a very long time now.
What Capcom Says
The newest installment has not crossed even one week. Capcom is forecasting sales figures of 4 million copies for the game. This figure is expected to be achieved before the present financial year ends as per company sources.
We will know whether the target is achieved by 31st March, 2017. PC Games N confirms that exact sales revenues are not officially known yet. Capcom is set to report earnings on the 1st of February, 2017.
