Resident Evil Revelations will be arriving on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, will it retain the franchise’s spirit? This appears to be an important question for both fans and critics. After all, the Resident Evil series does have what appears to be a problem with themes.
The Resident Evil brought about a new age of “survival horror” with its 1996 release. Unfortunately, the franchise was unable to be consistent with its theme across its games. Fans consider Resident Evil Revelations a comeback for gamers who want the “classic” formula of the series.
Interestingly, fans may wonder just how Capcom will bring the Nintendo 3DS title to modern consoles. After all, there are significant differences between the 3DS and devices like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, Capcom really seems to be intent on bringing Resident Evil Revelations to the modern generation of gaming.
Resident Evil Revelations: What To Expect
The news came courtesy of the official Resident Evil Twitter account. A recent tweet announced that the game will, in fact, arrive in North America and Europe this fall. In fact, the title will be available in both physical and digital versions. Unfortunately, not much was revealed after that. Capcom did promise to provide more information “soon.”
Fans of the franchise may consider this a good move to reinvigorate interest to classic Resident Evil entries. After all, Resident Evil 7 practically changed the “tone” of the entire series. Revelations may help gamers remember that there was, in fact, a game that still tried to go back to the hit franchise’s “survival horror roots” before RE7.
The problem of “themes” is something fans constantly stress. Resident Evil‘s first titles emphasized on the need to conserve resources and play smart in an environment that is out to kill players. Unfortunately, future games of the franchise appear to focus more on its action-adventure elements.
Revelations was originally released as a 3DS title in 2012. It was eventually ported to the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Wii U in 2013. This means Capcom may have indeed planned for the PS4 and Xbox One ports all along. Moreover, Game Rant speculates that the new versions will have the same updated features of the 2013 releases.
These include improved lighting and new difficulty modes. Additionally, there were classic characters introduced in Revelations’ 2013 release. Game Rant predicts the future renditions may have 4K support.
Revelations takes place between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Players will be in the shoes of Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. The game uncovers more secrets about the Umbrella Corporation.
The title takes place on the Queen Zenobia. This is a luxury ocean liner that has a dark history. Despite its rich exterior, it has a lot of monsters and deadly secrets that lurk within.
GameSpot writes that despite the game’s lukewarm reception, it is still one of the recent titles “truest” to the franchise’s roots. Unfortunately, this thematic approach did not save the entry from criticisms.
The game retains classic elements of the franchise. Bullets and weapons are scarce, and enemies are hard to kill. However, the monsters themselves appear to be “uninspired.” This is highly unlike the first few Resident Evil titles that were considered as some of the scariest games of all time.
Capcom will hopefully include new features that will make the game scarier and more entertaining. Unfortunately, one might have to wait for a teaser or a trailer in order to make a more plausible evaluation. Regardless, players may want to give this title a shot in order to get a refresher on the story of the franchise prior to Resident Evil 7.
