Plans on AI Assistant

The Korean electronics company said in early October that it was buying Viv, the startup company which was created by Siri co-founder Dag Kittlaus. Kittlaus, along with the few 30 employees of Viv, was said to join Samsung, according to Kittlaus in a report by Recode.

But Samsung was said to not give a wide approach to AI as much as Apple and Google do. Samsung mobile unit CTO Injong Rhe said that the company’s goal is more “device-centric”.

Android Authority said that Lee Jae-yong, Samsung Electronics’ vice chairman, confirmed plans to include a new digital assistant for the Galaxy S8 during a press meeting at Seoul. “We are developing a key major interface which will bring about a totally new paradigm; an open AI platform,” claimed Jae-Yong.

Samsung Not Offering AI Assistant

In another Android Authority report of Korea Business, Google is proscribing Samsung from proceeding with those plans. The reason was because of a patent-sharing agreement that the two companies ratified in 2014.

The agreement entered into by both companies allows them to use each other’s patents in their devices and services for a period of 10 years. Google invoked the non-compete clause of the agreement. This put a stop to Samsung with regards to pushing through with the digital assistant plans for the newest Galaxy S8.

Nonetheless, the non-compete clause can be amended by Samsung and Google if they enter into an express negotiation.

Both parties have not confirmed such Samsung Galaxy S8.

Android Authority speculates that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be launched in late February or early March next year. This may be at an event in New York after the Mobile World Congress 2017 tradeshow.
