Star Trek is not only expanding its universe for the past 50 years but it is also expanding the platform where people can watch it. The sci-fi franchise will officially make its way back on television next year through Netflix and CBS. The much awaited TV series Star Trek Discovery is continually making headlines especially with the announcement of its lead actress.
Who is the latest addition to the Star Trek Discovery cast?
Details of the upcoming Star Trek TV series is slowly being unveiled this year. During the first half, CBS released its first teaser. And in the summer, the official title was revealed in the San Diego Comic Con. Now that the year is about to end, the lead actress for the said series was revealed.
According to a confirmed report by Entertainment Weekly, The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green was signed to be the Star Trek Discovery lead actress. She will be playing a lieutenant commander on the said series. Her character’s name is not yet disclosed and according to a report by Digital Trends, she will be referred only as “Number One” throughout the first season.
Martin-Green is making history as she will be the first African-American to lead a Star Trek series. Her role will also be the first lead character who is not a starship captain. This new perspective was made and agreed on by executive producer Bryan Fuller and showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. The highly anticipated series, Star Trek Discovery, is expected to be released in May 2017.

Since Martin-Green is expected to lead the new Star Trek series, fans of The Walking Dead are wondering if she will have to leave the latter. The answer is, no. The actress will reportedly continue portraying Sasha Williams in AMC’s megahit series.
