There is no doubt that Star Wars is one of the biggest cash cows in the movie industry. Every film that comes out of the movie franchise is always a massive box office hit. In fact, last year’s The Force Awakens sold out its pre-order tickets in minutes. Will it be the same sold out case as Star Wars Rogue One release date is near?
The second standalone Star Wars movie
Star Wars Rogue One, although still part of the Star Wars Universe, is not an “Episode” film. It will be the second standalone or sidestory movie of the franchise. When The Force Awakens was announced, people were ecstatic about it regardless if it is an Episode or not. Fans did so not only because it is Star Wars but also because it has been 10 years since the last one came out.
The film was such a success that it became the fastest selling movie of all time, according to a report by Polygon. It is also 3rd in the all-time box office movies list after Avatar and Titanic. The three-clock world premiere of The Force Awakens recorded 5,400 attendees across three theaters.
Star Wars Rogue One release date and other details
The world premiere of Star Wars Rogue One is smaller than The Force Awakens‘ but the extravagance definitely did not fall short. The night not only featured some big names in the industry but also a full size X-Wing fighter and a full size TIE Fighter. These big aircrafts resulted in road closures until Tuesday 6AM according to Deadline.
The event started at 7PM and when it ended, the venues were filled with deafening cheers, especially every time a cast member’s name was announced. Dane Cook was one of the lucky ones in the premiere and raved about the movie on his Instagram.
Star Wars Rogue One release date is December 16, 2016. The cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, Genevieve O’Reilly and Spencer Wilding.
Will there be a Star Wars film every year?
It was announced last year that there will be a new Star Wars film every year until 2019. Disney has big plans with the movie franchise and instead of the initial three new entires in the saga, there will be more. The Episode films will be released every other year and in between will be the spinoff films like Rogue One this year. Episode VIII is set to be released in 2017 and Episode IX in 2019. A standalone film featuring a young Han Solo will be released in 2018.
Although no further films were announced past 2019, the studio made it clear that they will be releasing a Star Wars film as long as there will be people buying tickets to watch it. A similar approach was made by the Studio with their Marvel Entertainment franchises. It worked well for the MCU superheroes and there is a big chance that it will also work out with Star Wars.
