Psychonauts 2 is an upcoming platform game by Double Fine Productions. In lieu of the release of the game, the development team has released a trailer which shows new footage of gameplay.
The developers announced the game during The Game Awards 2015. The second title was funded through a $3.3 million crowd-funding drive through Fig which started right after the game was announced. The game received million-dollar funding in less than 24 hours time from the opening of said drive, gaining a total of $3.8 million. Reportedly, Double Fine will release the game in 2018.
Psychonauts 2 is played in the third-person point of view, which is similar to the way gamers played in the first title. In the game, the player gets to take hold of Raz who is a new graduate Psychonaut. He has psychic abilities and can delve into others’ minds. To do this, the player uses “Psi-Powers” like telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and levitation.
In line with the launch of Psychonauts 2 as reported by Game Rant, Double Fine has revealed that a new publisher, Starbreeze Studios – publisher of Chronicles of Riddick, Payday 2, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons – will help them in promoting the game. The publishing company even added $8 million to the project. After they recover money from sales, Starbreeze Studios will obtain 60% of the profits.
Tim Schafer – a computer game designer who established Double Fine – confirmed that the new trailer for the game revealed actual in-engine gameplay which is a development update known as the Quarry Art test. Moreover, the developers improved the game further as compared to its predecessor. They said that they would add polish for improved experience.
The developers also improved the game controls for Raz. This includes the control of the game’s camera as well as its angles and other mechanics. Schafer has high hopes for this sequel and that it will fair better than its predecessor.
The trailer shows the headquarters for the Psychonauts found inside a forest. However, this demo from the trailer will not be in the official and final game. It serves simply as an art test for the various models as declared by Zak McClendon, lead designer for the game. Check out the trailer below:
The game will also be available in Virtual Reality (VR). Double Fine will release the VR version on February 21. Psychonauts 2 will be released on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
