Overwatch may be one of the highly anticipated games released last year and updates are still expected by players. The game was released in May last year on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. But it seems like the beta will only be released for PC for now.
Why Overwatch Beta Is Only For PC
The Overwatch beta will only be available for PC for now. This is because of what happened during its public test region. The PC-exclusive game had players test out patches before the official release. Jeff Kaplan, the game’s director explained in a developer update that the PS4 patch must still pass through Sony and the Xbox One patch through Microsoft. This issue is not applicable to the PC version, and that is why players can readily play the mutiplayer game in the PC.
Kaplan said in the latest developer update that “on the PC, we run on Battle.net or the Blizzard [Entertainment] platform which is something we wholly own and control here at Blizzard.” Kaplan said that this means that patching even as many as what the developers want is easily possible and the risks are their own burden if ever things do not go correctly as planned. Since Blizzard Entertainment owns the platform, they can easily implement Overwatch in the PC as a platform. Blizzard Entertainment is also responsible on their own time for the updates.
The PS4 and Xbox One versions go a different way. Sony and Microsoft still need to certify the new content on their systems. The certification said that the processes add extra time to the process of patching.
What Will Happen Now
Players who like to play games on the PS4 and Xbox One need not be disappointed. As per Kaplan, the extra time used in testing the PC patch will give advantage to console players in the future. “We use the PTR [Public Test Realm] time on PC to help get through that certification process on the consoles. We’re not ready to be on the consoles at the time we’re doing the PTR experience,” says Kaplan. The director said that the process for PS4 and Xbox One will be “logistically challenging” but players should not be disappointed because Blizzard Entertainment is working on the game.
